why cold capping

Losing your hair isn't "just cosmetic."

For many patients, hair loss is one of the most visible and emotionally difficult parts of chemotherapy. It affects how you see yourself — and whether you get to decide who knows about your diagnosis.

Cold capping — cooling the scalp before, during, and after infusions — can significantly reduce hair loss for many patients. It's been used safely for decades, and we believe every patient deserves to know it's an option.

how it works

Cold capping, step by step.

Cold capping works by cooling your scalp before, during, and after each chemotherapy infusion. The cold narrows blood vessels in the scalp and slows the activity of hair follicle cells, which reduces the amount of chemotherapy that reaches them.

1

Reach out before your first infusion

Contact us as soon as you know your treatment schedule — ideally two or more weeks before your first infusion. We'll walk you through how cold capping works, answer your questions, and help you decide if it's a good fit for your treatment plan.

2

Your kit ships to your door

We ship your complete cold capping kit anywhere in the country. It arrives before your first treatment with everything you need — caps, cooler, accessories, and step-by-step instructions.

3

We train you and your care partner

Before your first session, we schedule a virtual walkthrough with you and whoever will be helping you on treatment days. You'll practice fitting the cap, learn the timing, and know exactly what to expect — no guesswork on the day it matters.

4

Cap on treatment days

On each infusion day, you'll begin wearing the cold cap before your infusion starts, keep it on throughout, and continue for a period afterward. Caps are rotated on a set schedule to keep your scalp at the right temperature. Our concierge team is available virtually if questions come up.

5

Ongoing support through treatment

Cold capping is a commitment, and we stay with you for the duration. Check-ins, hair care guidance between sessions, and a real person to call when you need one.

6

Return the cooling equipment, get your deposit back

When treatment ends, send back just the cooling equipment — the cold caps, rolling cooler, and cold gloves & socks — in good condition, and we'll return your full $199 deposit. Everything else in the kit is yours to keep. That's it — no fine print.

How long will I need it? Your subscription simply runs for the length of your chemotherapy — typically 3 to 6 months, depending on your treatment plan. When your oncologist says you're done, you return the cooling equipment (cold caps, cooler, and cold gloves & socks — the rest of the kit is yours to keep), your subscription ends, and your $199 deposit comes back to you. Many patients also choose to continue capping for a few weeks after their final infusion; we'll help you decide what's right for you.

Can insurance help? Some insurers reimburse scalp cooling costs, and cold capping may be eligible for HSA/FSA funds. We provide itemized receipts to support reimbursement claims. Read more on our Insurance page →

our story

Why Manta Caps exists.

[Placeholder — founder story] Manta Caps started the way most meaningful things do: with someone we love sitting in an infusion chair. We watched firsthand how much of the chemotherapy experience is out of a patient's control — and how much losing your hair can compound everything else. It affects how you see yourself in the mirror, how strangers treat you, whether you get to decide who knows about your diagnosis and when.

Cold capping gave someone we love a piece of normalcy back. We started Manta Caps so more patients could have that choice.

[Placeholder] When we looked into cold capping, we found it worked — but the experience around it was harder than it needed to be. Confusing pricing. Equipment without real guidance. Patients and exhausted care partners left to figure out timing and technique from internet forums the night before an infusion.

We built Manta Caps to be what we wished existed: a complete kit that shows up at your door, honest pricing you can understand in ten seconds, and a real person who teaches you exactly what to do and stays available through your entire treatment.

We're based in Dallas–Fort Worth and we ship nationwide, because where you live shouldn't determine whether you have this option.

insurance

Insurance & reimbursement.

Coverage for scalp cooling is improving, but it's still inconsistent. Here's an honest picture of where things stand and how we help.

Where coverage stands today

Scalp cooling has gained meaningful recognition in recent years. A growing number of insurers have begun covering or reimbursing scalp cooling costs, and several states have passed or introduced legislation requiring certain insurance plans to cover it. Coverage varies significantly by state, by insurer, and by individual plan.

The practical reality: today, most patients pay out of pocket first and pursue reimbursement afterward. Some receive partial or full reimbursement; others don't. We'd rather tell you that plainly than let you be surprised.

How we help

While we can't file claims on your behalf or guarantee any outcome, we make the reimbursement process as smooth as we can:

🧾

Itemized Receipts

We provide detailed, itemized receipts for your deposit and monthly payments, formatted to support insurance reimbursement claims.

💳

HSA / FSA Eligible

Scalp cooling expenses may qualify for payment or reimbursement through Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. Check with your plan administrator.

📋

Guidance on Asking

We'll share tips on what to ask your insurer, what documentation typically helps, and how other patients have approached reimbursement requests.

Questions worth asking your insurer

If you want to explore coverage before starting, these questions are a good place to begin:

• "Does my plan cover scalp cooling or cold capping during chemotherapy?"

• "Is scalp cooling reimbursable under my plan as a treatment-related expense?"

• "What documentation do you need for a reimbursement claim?"

• "Is there a state mandate in my state that applies to my plan?"

The information on this page is provided for general educational purposes only and does not constitute insurance, financial, or medical advice. Coverage and reimbursement vary by plan, insurer, and state, and nothing here is a guarantee of coverage or reimbursement. Please confirm details directly with your insurance provider.

Questions, answered honestly.

These are the questions patients and care partners ask us most. If yours isn't here, reach out — a real person will answer.

For many patients, yes — clinical studies have shown that scalp cooling can significantly reduce hair loss for many people undergoing certain chemotherapy regimens. Results vary based on your specific drugs, dosage, hair type, and how consistently the capping protocol is followed. We'll talk honestly with you about what to expect given your treatment plan, and we'll never overpromise.

Scalp cooling has been used for decades and is generally considered safe for most patients with solid tumors. It is typically not recommended for patients with blood-based cancers (like leukemia or lymphoma). Always discuss cold capping with your oncologist before starting — we encourage it, and we're happy to provide information you can bring to that conversation.

We'll be honest: the first 10–15 minutes of each cap are cold. Most patients describe an intense chill that fades to numbness, and say it becomes very manageable after the first session or two. Your kit includes comfort items to protect your forehead and ears, and we share practical tips (warm blankets, warm drinks, distraction) that genuinely help.

Yes — cold capping works best with a care partner (a spouse, friend, family member) who handles cap rotation on treatment days. Caps need to be swapped on a schedule, and it's hard to do alone. We train your care partner right alongside you so they feel confident, not burdened.

Cold capping must begin with your first infusion to be most effective — you can't start partway through treatment and protect hair that's already been exposed. That's why we encourage reaching out as soon as you have a treatment schedule, ideally two or more weeks before your first infusion.

Most patients who cold cap successfully still experience some shedding — that's normal and expected. The goal is retaining enough hair that you feel like yourself and hair loss isn't visible to others. Many patients achieve that; some retain more, some less. We'll always give you a realistic picture rather than a sales pitch.

Gentle is the rule: less frequent washing, cool water, no heat styling, no coloring, minimal brushing, and satin or silk pillowcases. Your kit includes a full hair care guide, and our concierge team can answer specific questions as they come up throughout your treatment.

Normal wear from regular use is completely expected and never counts against your deposit. If something breaks during treatment, contact us — we'll get you a replacement quickly so your treatment schedule isn't disrupted. The deposit only comes into play for significant damage to the cooling equipment or if it isn't returned.

Yes — we ship nationwide from Dallas–Fort Worth, and return shipping is included when your treatment is complete. Wherever you're receiving treatment in the U.S., we can get a kit to you.

Sometimes. Coverage is improving but inconsistent — some insurers reimburse scalp cooling, and some states have passed legislation requiring coverage under certain plans. Most patients today pay out of pocket and pursue reimbursement with the itemized receipts we provide. See our Insurance page for a fuller picture.
